The Névé Adventure is Alpine Guides highest adventure for glacier explorers. It is a journey across the vast névé - the source - of the Tasman Glacier (Huapapa) to a pickup point on the hard ice.
The journey begins with an amazing scenic flight, landing you at 2,400 metres above sea level on the high névé.
This is the realm of the mountaineer, surrounded by the highest, most dramatic ice-clad peaks of the Southern Alps.
You will rope together for glacier travel and safely move on snowshoes, or crampons into the heart of the glacier.
Seracs and Blue Ice Grottos
The first zone of exploration is the Darwin Icefall, a surreal realm of caves, ice grottos and stacked blocks of ice the size of city buildings.
The azure-blue ice caves offer an escape from the summer sun. In cooler periods, adventurous parties can try their hand at a pitch of ice climbing.
The journey continues into the lower névé zone - around 4 km downstream, with many diversions, stopping before reaching the hard ice for your helicopter ride home.
Snow and ice conditions on the glacier vary constantly. No two trips are the same. Snowshoes are often needed (June - October) and conditions and usually very firm from January until May.
You will need to dress warmly during winter.
All The Gear
You'll meet your guide at our base in Mt Cook Village. They will explain the plan for the day and then equip you with all the adventure gear required. Then it is a short drive to your waiting helicopter.
Low Guide Ratios
Safety is always our priority. We run our glacier trips at a low guide to guest ratio. All groups travelling on the névé are roped together.
The Tasman Névé Adventure is for fit people. There is less distance covered than The Tasman Glacier Ice Trek.
You must be able to walk continuously on uneven terrain for several hours carrying a small backpack.
